Workspaces feauture
Posted on 23rd September 2009 by HelenAs well as the new series of sketchbook peeks, we also thought it would be interesting to take a regular look at people’s Work Spaces. Again because we are nosey, but also because people work in such different and wide ranging environments. First up is Nottingham Craft Mafia’s Petal Textiles.
Briefly describe your workspace.
My work space is also the dinning room, although its being used for this much less these days. There is a big table which I always manage to fill. It normally has my sewing machine, a cutting mat, my sewing box and a pile of work in progress. There is also a wall of shelves which is full of books and CD’s and lots of boxes and baskets full of materials and stock.

What are your favourite things about your workspace?
Orla Kiely Stem wall paper – This wall paper is just on one wall and some how I managed to only use 1 roll, just don’t look at it too closely. Its on the wall opposite where I normally sit, and it never fails to make me smile and often provides some well needed inspiration.
My sewing machine – My old one blew up at the start of the year and at the time I was so upset, but actually it was a good thing, as it hated machine embroidery and caused me so many issues. But I now love my new machine.
Table – This table is now about 10 years old. Its just a cheap one from IKEA, its good as I can make it bigger if needed, or chose to have it smaller, so I can have more space on the floor around me. Its good because it has got slightly damaged over the years, so I don’t feel I have to be too careful.
Location – I love having my workspace in my house. I like that I can work at strange times and can just do a bit here and there and don’t have to travel anywhere. But sometimes its nice to shut the door and try and forget it.

Is there anything you would change?
Storage – we have so many books and CD’s and my stash of materials is ever increasing, so I do feel like I am running out of storage space and really do need some more.
The Lighting – The natural light is great, but the main electric light is very dim. I think I need a bright lamp, especially as I do most of my work in the evening, but I do have a lovely lampshade.

Thanks Petal. Next month we will be taking a look at Sooziebee’s Studio.
