Erdems S/S 2010 Collection
While in Paris we visited Colette a shop which people often go to be seen in. It is like a mini department store, with books and gadgets, cds, phones, shoes, a perfume section and Erdems S/S 10 collection. It also has a restaurant and a gallery upstairs! It wasn’t a very big space but it was laid out well. The down ground floor felt a bit like Urban Outfitters in London.
The slightly rude staff also went round cleaning up with disinfectant spray, spraying air freshner and straighting things up people had moved them.Photographs weren’t allowed that’s why they are all a bit rubbish, security guards jumped in front of my camera on two occasions!
Erdems Spring Summer 2010 Collection was lovely to see up close, the fabrics were printed with a bright large floral pattern.

January’s Workspace Feature

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010
This month we are taking a peek at ceramicist Charlotte Hupfield’s workspace.
Briefly describe your workspace?
My ceramic creations are all produced in my workshop out in my garden. It is a perfect little den where I sometimes hide out to get away from the rest of the world. Although very cold during the winter months, it can get roasting in the summer and that’s when I like to keep the door open. As well as using plenty of room to leave my work to dry out, I also use my workshop to store clay, glazes, tools, books and packaging.
Favourite things about your workspace?
The view of the garden right on the doorstep where I can watch the birds and the odd squirrel who jumps onto the roof with a thud from the trees. It’s good to be so close to nature as it is what I am inspired by. It’s nice to be able to go out an pick a few leaves if I want to impress some into the clay. Also the light shining in through the windows, and the fact that my workspace is right outside in my garden.
Is there anything you would change?
In time the space will probably become too small, so I may change to a larger size although I’m happy with my space at the moment.

December’s Workspace Feature – Pennydog

Monday, December 21st, 2009

This month we are visiting Resin Jewellery maker Pennydog’s work space in rural Leicestershire.

Briefly describe your workspace?

It’s an ex-dining room, about 20ft square with a fireplace that we are going to start using to eradicate the fumes in my room as well as a lovely toasty working environment! I have lots of storage, a table for sanding, drilling and composing my jewellery, a desk for casting and a desk for varnishing if necessary.

pd1

Favourite things about your workspace?

I love the size- in our old house I had a box room to work in and everything would spill into every room of the house. With this room, I have room to expand, have friends round, hold workshops and also enough floor space to work on large scale future projects, such as furniture. It’s a retreat away from the rest of the house as it isn’t immediately next to the living room or kitchen areas. The medieval style chandelier lighting gives it character too.

pd2

Is there anything you would change?

I would like to replaster and redecorate the walls as an old damp problem has made them crumbly around the bottom, however it is a rented house so for the time being I just hide the damage away!

Thanks Pennydog for showing us around your workspace.

Work Spaces – Jo Williams

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

This month we are taking a look Jo Williams student workspace.  Jo is a member of Nottingham Craft Mafia and has very kindly let us have a peak at her work space.

Briefly describe your workspace
This is my workspace for this year in a student house when I am not in the print room. Being a Textile Designed student I have a lot to pack into a small space, so I have to be clever and economical. I don’t have studio space at university until 3rd year so this where I hang out a lot, maybe too much!

What are your favorite things about your workspace?

My big book collection: I do love art and textile books and have managed to collect many over the last few years which makes my Dad; a librarian very happy. I pick up quite a few in charity shops, though some are older than they are still an amazing fountain of knowledge! I also have 5 cook books, which is pretty good for a student!

My trusty angle poise lamp: I once thought these lamps were old fashioned now, I love them! It is perfect for painting and working in the evening as it moves into any angle.
3 big shelves (complete with miniature bunting): almost big enough to hold my crafty clutter!
A cup of tea and a sweet treat: The perfect way to start working and for brain food!
My trusty lists: I always have a list of things to do; otherwise I would be so unorganized and the best bit is ticking things off.
Current project basket: I have a basket to keep my current crafty project together; I usually have at least one on the go.
Radio 1: Is usually my sound track when I work, I like the chatting, jokes and finding out the latest news.

My almost full set of knitting needles: Thanks to my Grandma my set is nearly complete.
My princess mirror: I picked this up in a junk shop in the summer, and after a polish it looked even better.

Is there anything you would change about your workspace?
I really could do with a bigger desk as it is a challenge to make a sketch book and I usually have to spread out onto my bed as well which isn’t a great idea when there’s paints involved!
One day I dream of a big studio so I don’t have to abandon precious things in my parent’s loft, 200 miles away! Also possibly by the sea, as I have had my eyes on the ones in the Arches on Brighton beach for a long time now.

Thanks very much Jo.

Sue’s Sketchbook Peeks – Jessica Gonacha Swift

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

The latest instalment in my Sketchbook Peeks Series is the wonderful Jessica Gonacha Swift, who I first discovered on Etsy, and then her blog, you can find out more about Jessica here. Check out her wonderful patterns and illstrations, they are bound to inspire you

Before we start, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into your art/craft/design career, how it all started and where you are now…

My name is Jessica Gonacha Swift, and I’m an artist and pattern designer living in Atlanta, Georgia. I grew up in Boulder, Colorado and went to Ithaca College in upstate NY, where I earned a BFA. When I graduated from college, I moved back to Boulder and was working as a waitress at a miserable restaurant. I applied for my first ever juried show during that time and got accepted, and one day I decided I just couldn’t work at the restaurant anymore. I quit and declaredto myself that I was going to make it as an artist on my own. Looking back, I think that was a pretty crazy decision, but thankfully it’s worked out so far! I’ve been making a living as an artist since I was 23 years old (with a couple of part-time jobs here and there), and I’m now 29 and fully supporting myself as an artist/designer

How long have you been using sketchbooks?

I’ve really only started using sketchbooks the last few years. I wasn’t a big sketcher in college or the few years afterwards, but I really like using them to collect ideas now and as a place to lay down the framework of my illustrations.

How often do you use your sketchbook?

I use it most days in one form or another. I’ve been drawing more with my pen and tablet lately, so it’s lessened a bit, but I love my sketchbooks. J I use it to write down ideas so I don’t forget things, and almost all of my work starts out in black and white in my sketchbooks, so it’s a regular part of my days.

2

Do you have a favourite and why?

I tend to use Strathmore recycled drawing paper sketchbooks. I like the weight of the paper and the spiral bound edges. I like things to lay flat.

How do you feel with the prospect of starting a new sketchbook with lots of lovely blank pages?

It’s exhilarating! I wonder what it’s going to be filled up with, and I always get a little nervous on the first page, like it’s going to set the tone of the whole book or something. But I love the feeling of a while book of blank pages that I can do whatever I want with. It’s like a fresh start.

When and where do you get your sketchbook inspiration?

There’s no real rhyme or reason to it. I draw a lot from photographs , so browsing through photos inspires me. Walking through my neighborhood also inspires me. I often pick up interesting twigs or pods that I find that sometimes turn into drawings in my sketchbook.

3

What is your favourite medium to work with?

I love black pen. Lately I’ve been using a 0.3 Staedtler pigment liner pen, which is perfection.

How would you describe your sketchbook process?

I use my sketchbook to draw things that I’ll later colored and work on digitally, so there are lots of black and white images inside– often a lot of different little drawings on a page. I scan the drawings into my computer and go from there. So really my sketchbook is just the place for my work to begin. The drawings take on a different life once I have them in my computer.

6

Where is your ideal sketching location?

I like to sit on the floor in my studio to draw in my sketchbook. It lets my imagination flow more than when I sit at a table or a desk. I think it’s the kid in me coming out!

How have your sketchbooks evolved over the years?

I’ve started using them more over the years, so I’ve noticed that everything in my sketchbooks have a purpose. Or, they’ve become something else, I guess. There’s not a lot of random doodling in there—it’s very focused. When I didn’t work so much digitally, my sketchbooks were more a place to just play. Now the purpose has changed and they are an integral part of my actual work.

If you had to pick one favourite sketchbook page which would it be and why?

This drawing just makes me happy. (image #7) I wanted to create something that conveys a positive message, and I loved the idea of the girl listening to inspirational and positive words in her headphones. I get really excited when I get to the point of a drawing where I really know what it’s going to be about, and this one turned out to be about saying YES to life. I love that. (I also included the finished piece (image #8), which I colored digitally, just for fun!)
