Gillian Lee Smith’s love of storytelling, costume, character and history has led her to create three dimensional sculptures of the characters that appear in her 2D artwork, as well as other mixed media work and textiles.
Baroque and Victorian periods are especially evident in Gillian’s designs and her work often delves into her fascination with dreams and memory, dolls and puppets and the expression and characterisation of our nature. As well as using her imagination in her 3d characters and artwork, Gillian also incorporates traditional textile techniques into making accessories and adornments, such as feltmaking, crochet and embroidery. A nod towards the skills gained whilst studying costume design and an ongoing fascination of crafts from times gone by, interpreted in more contemporary ways.
Graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 2006 with a BA (hons) in Performance Costume, Gillian has since been developing her artwork and teaching workshops as well as co-ordinating reminscence work with older people.
