So, eh, you’re interested in joining the Nottingham Craft Mafia? We’re always on the look out for crafty creative types in the Nottingham area and our next big thing could be you!

Read all of the following information carefully before joining, it’s really important.
And took us ages.

To apply to join, you must…

♥ Be based in Nottingham. Yes, we will accept applications from people in the East Midlands area (such as Derby, Loughborough, Leicester etc.) until another Mafia is set up in your region, but makers who live or study in Nottingham will have priority.

♥ Be an active seller. Whether through your own website, etsy (or something similar) or at markets or fayres – we are keen to accept already established businesses as well as helping relative newcomers.

♥ Have web presence. It is essential that all of our members have access to the internet, email and some kind of web presense for their business (as simple as an Etsy page or as complex as handcoded HTML goodness on your own domain!) We will not accept you initially if you do not fit this criteria but we are more than happy to help you get started on your big web journey (then you can apply again!)

♥ Fit the Craft Mafia ethos. We feel the Craft Mafia represents the best contemporary makers – more alt-craft and less Hobbycraft ! Are you up on what the Craft Mafia is and does, on an international level as well as in individual cities? Please look at our existing member profile pages, craftmafia.com and the flickr pool to find out if you fit in.

♥ Meet us! It is important to us that everyone in our family is passionate and keen to get involved. We want active members who will help us strive towards our goals together, as a collective. We therefore see this as a very important criteria – we will not consider your application if we haven’t met you. Please email us after applying to arrange a meeting and/or if you are planning to come along to any of our events.

As a member of the NCM, you get…

♥ Promotion for your business! Every member gets a profile page on our website detailing everything about them and their crafty business; displaying photos of their products and linking back to their website/s. A link to our website is included on the craftmafia.com directory, and every member shop features in the main Craft Mafia shopping guide. Craft Mafia HQ in Austin, Texas advertise the whole familia in great magazines like Bust, Venus, Nylon and Craft – spreading the word worldwide!

♥ Support and advice. Through crafty get-togethers and our online forum (with members only section) – if you’re getting in a rut or just want some help with a new project, we’re here for you! The NCM prides itself for bringing together makers of different age groups and skill levels.

♥ To learn and develop your skills. All our members have a hand in the running of our collective and we actively encourage them to take part in the planning of our events, our busy shop and HQ – ‘Get Made’ and also design ideas and marketing. It proves an ideal opportunity to better already existing skills or find some hidden talent outside of the workplace.

♥ Selling Opportunities! You will have the chance to sell your work at events we organise and take part in and also in our city centre retail outlet – ‘Get Made’!

♥ Discounts from our supporters. We’re linked to a lot of independent businesses and organisations in the Nottingham area, from supply shops to graphic design houses and as a member you will be offered great discounts and deals.

If we haven’t met you yet, we will email you to arrange this (again, this is a really important part of the process!) The application process can be long, so please don’t worry if it takes us a little longer to get back to you than we’d like!

We charge £20 a year for standard membership – an additional £20 is required if you wish to sell your work in and be involved in the running of our retail outlet and HQ – ‘Get Made’. These costs cover website admin, publicity, print and events.

We’re sorry if you don’t quite fit with the membership criteria or we don’t accept your application this time around. You are welcome to try again next time we have a call for new members (always announced on our blog, forum and through our mailing list).
